What is a Holistic Dentist?

Today, people are more aware of everything they put into their body. They want to avoid toxins and promote good health. At Pure Dental, we feel the same way. That is why we practice holistic dentistry. It's an approach to dentistry that promotes your health and wellness. It's a step beyond just treating disease. Plus, it's a consciousness of the health of the whole person, not just your teeth.

According to the New York Department of Health, "Oral health and general health are inseparable. Diseases and conditions of the mouth have a direct impact on the health of the entire body."

Outcomes of Holistic Dentistry

Recent research has documented a strong connection between periodontal health (the health of the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth) and serious systemic illnesses such as heart disease, pulmonary disease, and premature birth. We have known for a long time that keeping your teeth clean was the best insurance against gum disease. Now you have extra incentives to maintain healthy gums.

Also, infections of the teeth can cause you to feel run-down. When those infections are treated, energy returns.

On the other hand, people with good oral health tend be healthier overall and have healthier babies.

Concerns of Holistic Dentists

Holistic dentists are especially conscious of the overall health effects of the substances that they introduce into your body. For example, many dentists still prefer placing what they call silver fillings. However, these fillings are less than 50% silver, and actually have more mercury in them than silver. Dr. Lopez, as a holistic dentist, would never place a filling containing mercury into a patient.

But even many mercury-free dentists will place composite fillings that have bisphenol A (BPA). The National Toxicology Program at the Department of Health and Human Services has raised concerns about BPA, saying that it may have adverse effects on some human tissues. It mimics estrogen and interferes with the proper function of this hormone. The FDA is trying to reduce human exposure to BPA. Dr. Lopez makes sure that none of the filling materials she uses on patients contain BPA. There are very few dentists that take this additional safety step.

She is also concerned about the effects of her operating procedures on the health of her patients. A number of studies have shown that dental operating water that circulates through dental equipment and gets sprayed into the mouth has particularly high levels of bacteria. Dr. Lopez triple filters all the water she uses in her office.

Here is a partial list of what Dr. Lopez does to help insure your safety and whole body health in her office:

  • She is a mercury-free dentist.
  • She only places BPA-free fillings.
  • The walls in the office are painted with VOC-free paint. VOC or "volatile organic compounds" evaporate into the atmosphere, contributing to the ozone problem.
  • Her water is triple filtered.
  • The flooring in the office is made of special non-toxic materials.
