Chicago Porcelain Veneers

If you are uncomfortable with your smile, you are not alone. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry conducted a study that showed half of all Americans are not happy with the appearance of their smile. The good news is there is a solution. Whether your teeth are crooked, stained, mishaped, or chipped, porcelain veneers can fix all of that and give you a stunning smile. In as little as two visits you will have a gorgeous new smile designed with an artistic touch according to your specifications.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin wafers of porcelain (about the thickness of a fingernail) that are bonded to your teeth to create a complete smile makeover. Porcelain is the perfect choice because of the natural way it mimics your natural tooth structure. No other restorative material comes close. Porcelain transmits and reflects light in just the same way your natural teeth do. There are also the added benefits that porcelain is harder and resists stains better than your natural tooth enamel, so not only are you creating a beautiful smile, but you're strengthening it as well.

Problems Solved by Porcelain Veneers

  • Crooked Teeth—While braces will straighten your crooked teeth, they often take two years to do so. If you want a straight smile quickly, porcelain veneers can give it to you.
  • Gaps Between Teeth—If you have gaps between your teeth, they can make your teeth wider.
  • Mishapen Teeth—They can shorten or lengthen your teeth and contour them to whatever shape you desire.
  • Discolored Teeth—Your teeth can be just as white as you want.

Choosing Your Porcelain Veneers Dentist

While the possession of a dental license makes a dentist legally qualified to place porcelain veneers, it doesn't make him or her an artist. People often don't realize that dentists, as a group, are simply not very artistic. They like to fix things, and so they tend to look at teeth as if they were an engineering project. Dr. Lopez is different. She is an artist by temperament, so it is very important to her that when you ask her to create a new smile for you that it be as artistic and beautiful as possible.

One thing that she does differently is the planning she puts into creating your smile design. Did you know, for example, that the shape of your teeth affects the image you project? When your teeth first erupt, your very front teeth are usually the longest teeth in your mouth. Over time, they wear down to where the lengths of the front teeth are more even. Thus we associate longer central incisors with youth, boldness, and sexiness. When the smile line is more straight, that conveys maturity and sophistication. More rounded canine teeth give a softer appearance to the smile while more pointed canines make you appear more aggressive. Dr. Lopez will discuss all these issues with you and will help you design a smile with her artistic touch. And once you and her settle on a smile design, she will create it in wax first, to make sure she understands what you want and to give you an opportunity to critique the design.

But she even takes it a step further. Once the laboratory fabricates your new smile, she will try it on you with a special try-in paste for your final approval. At that point, if you don't love your new smile, it goes back to the lab until you do. This is her beautiful smile guarantee. Very few dentists stand behind their smile makeovers with that kind of a guarantee.

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

As discussed above, the first step is determining your smile design.

Then the process of creating your new smile in porcelain begins. Ordinarily, some preparation of the teeth is required. Sometimes this is as small as creating an almost imperceptible finish line on the tooth, so that the final result, where the porcelain meets the tooth, will end up being perfectly smooth and will not have a ridge. Then an impression is taken of your prepared teeth, and that is sent to the ceramist, along with instructions and possibly photographs and models, describing the smile design and the color desired for your smile makeover.

Meanwhile, you will be wearing temporary veneers that will give you an idea of what the final result will look like.

After the ceramist has created your new smile, it will be tried in to make sure that you love it and that it also meets Dr. Lopez's expectations. If it does, it will be bonded to place so securely that the veneers will act as a second enamel, and you will have that gorgeous smile you've dreamed of.

Before Chicago Porcelain Veneers After Chicago Porcelain Veneers

Here are photographs of a case done by Dr. Lopez. In the "before" photograph on the left, his teeth appear a little dingy looking, it looks like he has an underbite, his upper teeth are a little crooked, and it appears that they are too small for his face.

In the "after" photograph on the right, notice how all of these problems have been corrected. And also notice how natural the teeth appear. While porcelain veneers can be made to look dazzling, in the case of this patient, that didn't fit his personality. Dr. Lopez gave him an attractive smile that makes him look more mature, sophisticated, and intelligent.
